About Us
Our History
1970
The Potter’s House was birthed in a time known as the Jesus People Movement, a Christian revival (historically referred to as a spiritual awakening) that swept through America in the early 1970’s. The founding pastor, Ps Wayman Mitchell, had just taken over the church in Prescott, Arizona. Ps Mitchell had a vision to see his local church make an impact in that community. As they began to share the Gospel on the streets, God began to move in that town and the church experienced tremendous growth. It wasn’t long before Ps Mitchell and the Prescott church wanted to plant a church that would replicate exactly what they were doing to have an even greater impact. In 1973, Prescott planted its first church and today the Potter’s House Christian Fellowship has spread across the globe. What began as a local church in a small town of America has now becomea movement all over the world.
The name comes from an Old Testament verse of the Bible: Jeremiah 18:2 ‘Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.’
1978 Perth, WA – First Overseas Church Planted
In 1978, a couple from the Prescott church was sent to Perth to begin a new church, following the pattern that had been set in Prescott of evangelism, discipleship and church planting. Since then, that one church launched into Perth has grown into a large congregation and is the mother church of the Australian fellowship, holding annual Bible conference. Today there are over 200 churches that trace their roots back to this one church.
1979 Darwin, NT
Ps Neil Prosser and his wife Brenda arrived in Darwin in 1979 after leaving behind their farm in Katanning, WA. Ps Prosser soon became the senior pastor, and a short time later, and with much prayer, made the decision to align himself and the Darwin church with what God was doing through Ps Mitchell and The Potter’s House Fellowship. Only eternity will reveal the multitude of lives that have been changed as a direct result of this faithful congregation investing in the nations for the sake of the Gospel.
2009 Merrylands, NSW
Launched as a church-plant from the Darwin congregation, Ps Sean and Jessica Geaney pioneered the work in Merrylands. People began to respond to the Gospel as it was preached and the church began to grow.
In 2012, Ps Adam and Jane Woods were sent to take over the pastorate of the church, continuing in what had already begun. With many cultures and nationalities, Merrylands is ripe for harvest, and our vision is that we would become a church-planting centre.
In 2019, Ps Johnny and Lucy Nguyen were launched from Perth Conference to take over the pastorate of the church. Two years on, we see further growth and started reaping the harvest that was sown throughout the decade. Blessed with a new building and better facilities, we continue on our mission to glorify God through the great commission.
OUR VISION
Evangelism
The Gospel taken outside the four walls is the absolute foundation of our church, in obedience to Mark 16:15 And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature’… We emphasize personal evangelism, and a large variety of outreaches to share the Gospel.
Conversion
We witness, testify and preach for a decision. The Gospel has the power to save and transform lives. 1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever… The bulk of our congregation consists of people converted here by the Power of God.
The Local Church
God has placed everything necessary to accomplish His will in the setting of the local church. Ephesians 1:22-23 …the church. Which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. God’s will is accomplished in us and through us as we connect and commit ourselves to a local church.
Discipleship
God intends for calling to Him, and for Him, to be accomplished through being trained and equipped within the setting of a local church. Therefore, the highest calling of a Pastor and congregation is to obey God’s command in Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Church Planting
The result of disciples being raised up is that they be released into the harvest field. Matthew 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” We send couples to plant brand new congregations, with the aim of reproducing our vision in a new area.
World Evangelism
From the earliest Bible record, God’s vision is worldwide testimony and impact. The gospel message and the vision God has revealed to us is not simply American, but God-inspired; so therefore it works, and is relevant in every nation and culture of the world. Mark 16:15 all the world/every person…Matthew 28:19 all the nations… Our job as believers, and as the local church is to pray, train, invest, send and support workers to go into all the world!
STATEMENT OF FAITH
We believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant and authoritative Word of God.
We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and His personal return in power and glory.
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling every Christian is able to live a godly life. We further believe His power and gifts are available to believers today.
We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful humanity, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential, and that repentance from sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour is the only way to come into a relationship with God.
We believe in the resurrection of both those who believe in Jesus and those who do not believe those believing to eternal life with Christ and those unbelieving to eternal punishment in hell.
We believe it is important to uphold the scriptural practices of the early church. Therefore, we hold to the practice of water baptism and taking of Communion. We do not believe that either of these practices is essential for salvation, but that they serve as a demonstration of our living faith in Christ.
